EV charging in North Macedonia

North Macedonia had 2,047 battery-electric passenger cars at the end of 2025, about 0.33% of all passenger cars, and no national subsidy for buying an electric car or a home charger was found for 2026. Public charging is mostly provided by EVN Macedonia, whose map lists 12 DC fast-charging sites of up to 180 kW (nine at Makpetrol fuel stations) and more than 40 AC points in 20 towns; residents with an EVN card pay 25/28 MKD per kWh (AC/DC) and other drivers 30/40 MKD by bank card, VAT included. Seven sellers of home chargers were found, mostly in Skopje; some publish device prices of about €440–1,590 per wallbox, none publishes a fixed installation price, and no building-level charging service for apartment blocks was found.

What the law says about a charger in a shared garage or parking lot — who has to agree, who pays for the electricity and how it is metered.

The current text of the Law on Housing could not be retrieved, so the majority needed to install a charger or run a cable through common parts of a multi-unit building is not confirmed here. None of the Macedonian sources checked cites a legal article on chargers in apartment buildings; an installer's guide says the rules in this area 'are still developing'.

Two set-ups are described: (1) a cable from the resident's own apartment meter, so charging appears on the resident's own EVN bill and can use the cheap tariff; (2) one or two smart chargers on the building's common meter, with RFID cards and a built-in MID-certified meter, where software records each flat's kWh and the manager or house council receives a monthly report to recover the cost from each user.

Energy law and charging points

The Energy Law of 2025 (Official Gazette no. 101, 21.05.2025) defines a charging station ('станица за полнење': a device for charging one electric vehicle at a time or for swapping its battery) and lists EV charging services among the activities of energy entities. The part of the text that could be read has no licensing or pricing rule for charging operators and nothing on chargers in residential buildings.

  • Apartment buildings: the text of the Law on Housing was not retrieved (dejure.mk is blocked by robots.txt, pravdiko.mk has an expired security certificate, akademik.mk returned 404), so the co-owner majority for installing a charger in common parts is not confirmed.
  • Official sites did not load: moepp.gov.mk (environment ministry, timeout), economy.gov.mk (timeout) and ea.gov.mk (Energy Agency, DNS error). 2026 subsidy calls, the National Energy and Climate Plan and any EV targets could not be checked on official pages.
  • Registrations: no count of new battery-electric cars for 2025 or for 2026 to date was found. The State Statistical Office first-registration table has no fuel breakdown, and Eurostat (new passenger cars by motor energy, updated 01.09.2026) reports only a total of 42,159 for North Macedonia in 2025 with no fuel split; the definitions behind this total and the 'about 6,400 new cars sold' reported by trade media were not checked.
  • EV fleet figures from the State Statistical Office are quoted from media (CARclub.mk, Denesen.mk); the MakStat table shows values only after an interactive selection that could not be made with the tools used.
  • Public charge points: no official national count was found. EVN's map gives no total and some sites are listed once per connector, so the EVN figures are approximate; Electromaps (62 stations) is crowd-sourced; chargemap.com is blocked by robots.txt.
  • EVN's per-kWh prices appear only as an image on emobility.evn.mk/Tariffs.aspx; the figures (25/28 and 30/40 MKD) come from a specialist portal (29.07.2026).
  • Makpetrol, Charge&GO MK and Orion eMobility publish no per-kWh prices for North Macedonia; whether EVN's tariff applies at Makpetrol stations is not stated.
  • lawesgo.mk (title 'Electric chargers and cards') did not load (robots.txt timeout); its role (public chargers, cards or sales) is unknown.
  • Home chargers: loging.mk ('chargers for electric cars' category) returned 403 and e-vozila.apptree.mk did not load; large electronics retailers and car importers' wallbox offers were not checked. Charge&GO MK sells no home chargers locally and links to its Serbian shop (elektropunjaci.com), whose delivery or installation in North Macedonia was not checked.
  • Installation prices: no company publishes a fixed installation price; the only range (€100–300) comes from an import-advice site without a cited source.
  • Electricity: the 2026 all-in household price per kWh is calculated from the regulated energy price, the transmission and distribution fee used by the regulator-linked bill calculator (2.0339 MKD/kWh) and 18% VAT; the calculator's page does not name its publisher, and the 2026 municipal public-lighting fee was not found.
  • Subsidies: no source explicitly confirms or rules out support for home chargers, and municipal schemes (e.g. City of Skopje) were not checked; the September 2025 taxi-subsidy announcement has no published amount, budget or call.
  • Method: the web-search quota ran out during the check; the remaining items were verified by fetching known URLs only.
